We began raising “just a few more” Bourbon Red turkeys for friends over 10 years ago. That was over ten years ago and both our flocks and friends have grown. Thank you! It is a joy to see so many familiar faces, as well as new ones, and be a part of your holiday.
The big news this season: lower price! Each year we estimate the cost to raise the best turkey you will ever eat. Usually the price is bumped up a little. No small farmer expects to get rich but most do want to get some return on labor and investment. If our expenses are less, we pass that bonus on to you.
Included in the price is $2 per bird for the producer certification fee of the American Humane Association. Each year an auditor inspects our farm using rigorous criteria. We take pride in passing with high scores so you can be assured Caveny Farm Bourbon Reds are well cared for and healthy.
Bourbon Red turkeys are listed in one pound size ranges again this year. Select the size you want. It is trickier for us to track the number of birds available in the smaller ranges but feedback last year was very positive.
Unfortunately we will not have any ducks or geese this year. Waterfowl processing is really tough for a small farmer to find. The last time we raised Rouens, we transported all 400 ducks to an inspected Amish facility in Eastern Ohio for processing. The birds dressed out great but the trip added too much to the cost of raising waterfowl.
Caveny Farm raises poultry and lamb on pasture. Heritage breeds are our mainstay. Our birds are raised in pastures that grow grasses, clovers and amaranth. All of our poultry are fed custom formulated feed to compliment the nutrients found in our pastures.
Not too long ago most farms were "diversified" meaning the farm family raised more than one or two products for sale. In addition to the main farm activity such as dairy, the farm produced products such as eggs, pork, beef and perhaps fruits and vegetables. The farm family used these products themselves and sold surplus to friends, relatives and neighbors.
There are not many of these farms left today. But new types of diversified family farms are sprouting. Many of these farms raise wholesome products for direct sale to non-farm families who value locally grown fruits, vegetables, milk, meat and eggs.
